You Are As Young As You Feel

Researchers have learned that feeling younger than one’s actual age contributes to longevity. People who feel younger than their actual age will live 7.6 years longer. People who feel younger than their age will, on average, generally feel 12 years younger. People in their 70’s will tend to feel like they are in the 60’s. People in their 60’s will feel like they are in their 50’s, and so on…

This article went on to say that NO ONE wants to go back to being 20! Oh – I’m sure we would all love to LOOK like we did when we were in our 20’s – and have the energy we had when we were in our 20’s. (What is that expression? “Youth is wasted on the young.”) But with age comes a certain contentment that we lacked when we were young. The researchers call it “emotional satisfaction” – and it improves as we age in spite of sad events like the death of friends or loss of social status.

As we age, we tend to focus on what matters most such as personal relationships rather than the high drama of youth and its flailing about trying to figure it all out. The ‘happy-go-lucky’ days of our youth are replaced by a deeper sense of gratitude.

Here’s to getting older! It is definitely better than the alternative.
